WEYMOUTH WOODS STATE PARK, N.C.

This Preserve near Southern pines N.C. is a primary site in the state for a colony of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers. This species became endangered in 1970. The Longleaf Pine habitat has been decreasing in recent years and is the primary habitat for these birds. The site has well-marked trails from which one can see the Red-cockaded Woodpecker in addition to 100 or so other species of birds such as Cardinals,Pine Warblers, Nuthatches, Bachmans Sparrows, Goldfinch, Summer and Scarlet Tanagers, Prairie Warblers, Kentucky Warblers, Blue Grosbeaks, and Great Crested Flycatchers.
