ROOSEVELT NATURAL AREA AND TRAIL
This 260 acre area is located at Pine Knoll Shores, NC and the trailhead can be accessed on the west side of the parking lot at the NC Aquarium. The trail goes west from the aquarium along a beautiful dune ridge . The old dunes are clothed with an ancient maritime forest of Live Oak, Loblolly Pine, Red Bay and many other species. To the left and right of the dune ridge are interior and sound side marsh areas. This provides a rich environment for a great variety of wildlife in a small area, including waterfowl, wading birds, kingfishers, and a good variety of woods birds. It is a great spot to see migrating warblers in the fall and spring. Turtles, frogs, otter, squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, opossum, and many other species can be seen. This is an easy access site that puts you immediately into a very primitive wild area. Below are a few examples of things you may see here.
