NAGS HEAD WOODS PRESERVE
by Jerry Lotterhos
This site, operated by The Nature Conservancy, is located on the North Carolina Outer Banks. This may seem like a strange place to find a large(1400 acre) maritime forest with several hundred year old oak, beech, and hickory trees creating a serene environment on some of the largest sand dunes on the east coast. The dunes are in a chain of large dunes that includes the well known Jockeys Ridge. Nags Head Woods is a wooded jewel in the midst of the expected sand, open beach, and clustered beach homes one would expect along the coast. After all, the Kitty Hawk/Nags Head area is known as a major beach destination spot for summer visitors. If you are in the area and love wildlife and a serene walk in a beautiful old growth forest, this is the place for you.. There are several miles of trails across varied terrain including forest, pond, bog, and sound(Roanoke). There are about 100 species of birds here along with many other critters. Check it out! For history and trail information, these links will help.
