WINTER NOTES FROM THE FIELD

I am about ready for this "northern" winter weather to move on back home! I am getting a serious case of cabin fever--done about as much backyard birding as I need. Today, I did visit the Field, and was only there a short time because it started sleeting and I headed for home. But it was good to get out just for a little while. The snow is very pretty, especially in the rural areas where manmade structures don't confuse the landscape. It was a grey-sky day which added to the winter drab, but the snow brightened things up a bit. The Field is silent and barren this time of year, the soil regenerating its energy to power the spring's bloom. Spring is only a few weeks away, but it hardly seems like it with the ice and snow. I am glad to get a few snow pictures here though, because it will be fun to compare the green rush of color in April to today's gloom---

The critters were hiding today and I don't blame them, so getting pics was tough-- the highlight of the day was watching a Northern Harrier sitting out in the open field stalking a small flock of meadowlarks--without much success ---but I did manage to get a few very distant shots of it. The lighting was so poor and she was so far away, the pics are very poor, but I will share them with you anyway-- Saw a few sparrows, cardinals, juncos, and doves, most of them scratching around in barren spots the snow had not covered--looking for a few leftover seed from fall--
