I have not had an article about The Field this winter, but as usual something is always happening there. The Northern Harriers visit the Southeast in the winter months as the cold and snow up north make feeding more difficult. The mice and small field birds stay active in the fields in our area and offer a steady source of food at this time of year. the Harriers have not been as plentiful here this winter as they were last season, I suspect because the winter weather nationwide has not been as severe as last year. Last Friday I visited The Field and was treated to a real show by one of the few Harriers I have been able to photograph this season. This female was hunting about 50 yards away and made a catch of a mouse and proceeded to eat it close by. The pictures below are in sequence of the catch and the consumption. The last picture shows the bird flying away with the remains of the mouse in her claws, along with bits of grass--- Nature in action----
