The waterfowl were in abundance on Monday and I had a great day getting a few pics of some ducks in flight as well as of other refuge residents. I probably will not return until late spring when most of the migrants will have returned to their northern nesting areas. I wish them a successful baby season and hope they will bring their new young'uns to visit with us next fall. See pix from Monday below.
Monday will probably be my last visit to Lake Mattamuskeet this winter. The Refuge has been home to 350,000-400,000 waterfowl this season and continues to fulfill its major mission of protecting and nourishing this great wildlife resource. It is a shame that a few very narrow focused and self-interested persons are choosing to seek changes to the Lake that will only serve their narrow interests and may threaten the very role of wildlife protection this Refuge provides our waterfowl. It is time for all who are interested in maintaining this great resource to speak in its defense.
