On the beach I encountered a Gull who appeared to be in distress, acting like it was choking. As I watched, it struggled for about five minutes to cough up a small round ball. It was a piece of sponge which it had attempted to swallow and could not. It shows what ca happen with the materials we deposit in the environment. The bird appeared relieved to get rid of the sponge. It is always fun to hike the trails here--a great place if you are in the area! See pics below.
I spent a couple of mornings at FORT MACON STATE PARK, N.C. last week. As always, this site affords great birding with a variety of species present. Of special interest were the remaining Painted Buntings who will be leaving to winter ranges in a few weeks, Oysters, Common Terns, Black Crowned Night Herons, and a few shots of a Gull choking on a piece of sponge. Other common species were RW BBs, Cardinals, Carolina Chicadees, and House Finches. On the beach I encountered a Gull who appeared to be in distress, acting like it was choking.
