It has rained off and on all day here in Greenville, but I went to The Field this morning anyway to see if anyone was stirring. The rain was light and sporadic so I thought with the reduced heat a few birds might decide to feed between showers. I did catch a Grasshopper Sparrow, a couple of Blue Grosbeaks, and a Killdeer braving it. During the summer, after babies have fledged, there are always Barn Swallows here flying over the open fields feeding on the abundant insect population. There were a bunch of them this morning. I noticed that when the showers came, they seemed to disappear from the field and I wondered where they went because there are no bridges or structures here for them to get under. I found an area along the creek with steep banks and exposed limbs on small bushes where they would perch during rain periods. As soon as the rain stopped, they would return to their erratic flying over the field catching the insects. I don’t know if they stopped during the rain because the insects were not there then, or because they could not see them in the rain. At any rate, it was interesting to see. See the pics below---
