As I a writing this, Fort Macon State Park and the entire Atlantic Beach/Morehead City area is getting kicked with 90+ mph winds from Hurricane Florence who is spreading her joy along the coast of North and South Carolina! I am sitting safely at home in Greenville at my computer as the same storm is blessing us with rain and, thankfully, winds of only 30-50 mph. I spent a couple of days last week at Fort Macon, with late summer temps in the 95 degree range, with windless, humid days. Birding was not much fun after 10AM because of the heat. I had hoped to see some early fall migrators, but I think we will have to have a few cool fronts pass through this area before we see the migration. However, there were many summer residents still around and, as usual, I enjoyed exploring this favorite site. I hope the storm leaves the area intact, and will wait for the cooler warbler season to come! See pics below.
