Times with family are precious. As one's kids get older with jobs, children and school, and all of life's responsibilities, spending quality time together is difficult. Each year in the fall(usually October), we try to vacation for a week somewhere on our beautiful coast. last week my wife(Glyn) and I were at Sunset Beach, North Carolina's most southern beach, with my son(Mike) and his family--wife(Holly) and two sons(James and Jack). What great weather and good times we had!! Mike brought his new Towhee skiff so we were able to get in some time pursuing our favorite fishing--chasing red drum( and anything else that dared to bite)! Mike caught a nice 8-9 lb. red drum. The beach is everyone's favorite hangout-- my grandsons, James and Jack, were out testing the waves several times a day--and surfing even though the water was too cold for all us brave adults! With family together along with the excellent beach atmosphere, good fishing, and great seafood at nearby Calabash, it was a super time for us all. I highly recommend this area if you want a neat beach experience!!

At the southern tip of North Carolina is Bird Island, which represents our southern border with Little River, the N.C./S.C. natural boundary. From the Sunset beach, you can walk along Bird Island beach  to the jetties at Little River Inlet (round trip is 5.7 miles!). This is a beautiful walk and there are many birds. Near the jetties is the famous and mysterious Kindred Spirit mailbox, where you will find notepads and pen to share your thoughts, hopes, dreams, poems or whatever and to read the thoughts of other fellow trekkers to the spot.(worth the walk).

One day my wife and I also drove the hour south to spend the day at Huntington Beach State Park, one of my favorite birding spots. Some of the summer birds are gone to warmer places, but as always, there were many birds to commune with and get a few photos. Below I will share with you some of the pics from the trip including introducing you to my most favorite subjects--my family critters. There will also be a few critters from Sunset Beach, Bird Island, and Huntington Beach.
