FALL IN THE FIELD

The Field is my sanctuary close to home. I spend many hours here just enjoying God’s landscape. Seasonal changes bring new critters and different colors to the usual ones. Leaf changes this year have been more subtle than dramatic and we seem to be just slowly sliding on the color slope. The hickory trees here have been very productive this year and the local population of Fox Squirrels have been gathering and burying as many of the nuts as they can. It is interesting to me that many people in the area have never seen a Fox Squirrel. They tend to be more selective of wilder habitat with big nut trees and open areas, so they are not as widespread as the smaller, more well known grey variety. The Fox Squirrel(sometimes called the Red Squirrel) is about twice the size of its smaller cousin with an impressive long reddish tail. They are very pretty animals with their red and black trim and white nose. This fall, I have seen many and been able to get some nice photos. The pics below are of several gathering and burying hickory nuts.

The deer are everywhere. Below are pictures of a spike buck, and of the largest I have seen here this year, a six pointer. The last picture below is my favorite of this batch--a Flicker, one of my favorite woodpeckers. I love their coloration and this shot is a good representation of it. I hope you are having a great Thanksgiving!!!
