Then on October 14, I was there again for warblers and again found myself sidetracked by a beautiful Osprey diving the ponds for fish. This one was probably a visitor, because I think the residential pair have already left for warmer places. The bird gave me a real show, diving several times from a tall tree on the back pond. There are always different things to see at this favorite local birding site, and many times there are unexpected surprises. On October 12, I went looking for warbler migrators, but got caught up in the Cormorants diving for catfish. October is the month that the Park hosts a catfish contest and many local fisherman vie for the biggest one for prizes and bragging rights. Most of those fishermen could learn a thing or two from these guys!! What was amazing was the size of the fish they could catch and swallow. There were two fishing together, but one was having all of the luck. The other became obviously frustrated after a while and so the fight began over the latest catch.
