BOILING SPRING LAKES PRESERVE in JUNE.

My wife and I visited the Southport area in southeastern NC last week and in addition to relaxing and eating some great seafood, I was able to visit the nearby Boiling Spring Lakes Preserve nature trail on Wednesday morning. Click the link above link to go to the Main Page for this site. I arrived there about 6:30 AM under blue sky and a temp. of about 78 degrees. This was my first visit and I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was disappointed at first, walking about half a mile through dry Longleaf Pine Savannah without seeing a single bird or any other living thing! Then I came to the first wet creek area and things picked up. There was a Common Yellowthroat in the brush by the creek, and a Gray Catbird as well. Most of the birds I photographed were near the wet areas along the trail. This included a Summer Tanager, Indigo Bunting, Dove, Bluejay, Yellow-breasted Chat, Indigo Bunting(male and female), and Great -crested Flycatcher, and Bluebird. I was disappointed that I did not see a rareRed-cockaded Woodpecker, although there were many signs of their presence.

I did see a few butterflies and Dragonflies, and some unknown neat wildflowers.  While Pine Savannah Terrain is not my favorite birding condition, the morning was reasonably productive. See photos below of the critters I saw--
For lunch that day, Glyn and I ate at the Moore St. Deli in downtown Southport. Great sandwiches!!
Later that evening, we ate dinner
at The Frying Pan in Southport and the seafood was superior! I highly recommend this restaurant if you are in the area.
