Last Thursday (6/16 16) morning I visited one of my favorite and what I think is one of the prettiest nature trails in our area of North Carolina. The Basin Trail or Hermit Trail as it is also called begins at the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area south of Kure Beach, NC, and passes through maritime forest, tidal creeks , saltwater marsh, and large mudflats which are usually loaded with wading and shore birds. The 1+ mile trail is easy walking with several boardwalks that traverse huge spartina grass flats, creeks, and tidal pools. On this occasion I saw quite a few wading birds, a few woods birds and some very colorful dragonflies. At the beach, just off the trail I saw diving Pelicans, Gulls, and Terns. This trail is seldom used and offers a very tranquil and serene setting with beautiful low-country scenery and a variety of bird life as well as many deer. This is a trail you should not miss!! After a day on the trail. my wife and i like to have dinner at our favorite restaurant in Carolina Beach--Michaels Seafood-check it out and be sure to have the seafood chowder!!! See photos below taken on this trip---
