Fall was slow coming in Eastern North Carolina this year. Today is December 7 and even now we have had only 3 real frosts. But cold winter temps are finally the norm. The pictures below will reflect the late summer extending into mid- November, many showing green summer colors. The pictures were taken on 3 trips to The Field, taken from Nov. 15 until today, Dec. 7. Today the fields and trees are finally leafless and showing the browns and gold of winter. The winter birds we have in the area have been slow coming and there are some like the Hermit Thrush that have not appeared. Perhaps the recent cold and snow further north will move these birds down soon.
