FORT MACON IN EARLY SPRING

2/23/2018

The east coast of the country has had a very warm past week. Temperatures in NC have been in the 70s. Flowers are blooming and trees are budding. It is very early and no doubt we will have more cold days before summer. Wednesday this week I was at Fort Macon on the coast walking my favorite trails seeing what birds are hanging around. That morning Glyn and I were at our favorite breakfast spot, Banks Grill, which continues to serve up the best grits around! What a great way to start the day. On the trails, I was able to see quite a few species of the usual suspects for the season. There were no unexpected species, but of special note were Black Crowned Night Herons and White Ibis, both of whom frequently roost at the freshwater pond. There were also the usual Yellow-rumped Warblers, Cardinals, Mockingbirds, House Finches and Sparrows, as well as Grackles and Doves. I saw a large flock of early Goldfinch feeding on some leftover dry seed at the edge of the pond. There were few shorebirds to be seen. As always, this site offers great birding no matter the season. Enjoy the pics below!
