This old favorite birding spot in mid-winter usually can be counted on for a few of our regulars, even when temps are pretty cold for the area. It was around 35 degrees at 8 AM when i started on the trail back to the Tar River which borders the back of the Park. I was hoping to get a few pictures of enough of the local species for this blog entry since I have not posted for awhile. The Yellow-rumped Warblers were present in sunny spots, and several species of woodpeckers voiced their drumming enough for me to locate them. I saw Yellow-bellied, Downy, and Flicker, and heard several Pileated in the distance. The Cormorants were plentiful, coatng the lake bank trees with a winter coat of whitewash. The guardian Great Blue Herons were at their stations trying to catch a cold stunned fish bite. The trees are so gray and barren, the birds are easy to spot, but they also can see you and are quite skittish now. I was happy with the pics I got and was ready for a good cup of coffee when I got back to the car around 10:30. See pics below. SEE GALLERY BELOW. CLICK ON ANY PIC TO ENLARGE.
