While in the area of Pawleys Island, we drove south on Hwy 17 to Georgetown and had lunch, then visited the Gullah Museum. The museum provides insight to and historical remnants of the Gullah culture in the area. Michelle Obama's grandfather is from Georgetown and a Gullah quilt demonstrating the connection of the area to the Obama family is on display at the Smithsonian In Washington. At the museum, you can hear a wonderful story of the Gullah history and of the area connection to Michelle Obama. The storyteller is the charming Andrew Rodriguez, husband of the recently deceased Vernelle Smith Rodriguez who is the quiltmaker and founder of the museum. This is a "must visit" if you want to spend a blessed couple of hours learning about the history of this area and the Gullah people!! SEE GALLERY BELOW for bird pics.
Visiting this long-time favorite birding site never gets old and there are always surprises. Glyn and I were there for a late summer visit in mid-September and were blessed with early fall temps of high 70s-low 80s . I spent an hour one afternoon and a couple of hours on two mornings looking for birds in the park. The highlights of those visits included a dozen Roseatte Spoonbills, 2 Ospreys eating fish, a young Bald Eagle, and an American Avocet (which I rarely see and was the surprise). There were Ibis, Wood Storks, Herons and Egrets, Black Skimmers, and a few Sanderlings. To see photos of these, please check out the gallery below.
