FORT FISHER AREA NC BIRDING SITES
The Fort Fisher Area located just south of Carolina Beach, NC on Pleasure island includes the old fort built in the 1800s and later captured by the Union army during the Civil War, as well as a recreation area, and the Fort Fisher Aquarium. The history of the old fort is a fascinating tale of man’s ability to build as well as destroy. At the Fort site are several trails which offer good birding for seasonal sparrows, migrating warblers and raptors, as well as other wood birds. The rock jetty on the ocean side of the Fort offers sightings of shorebirds, gulls, etc. The Fort Fisher Aquarium provides a glimpse of the sea life of the Atlantic ocean and is a great family attraction. There are several small ponds on the grounds which attract Herons, Ibis, and other wading birds. There are also trails here
which offer sightings of seasonal migrants such as warblers and raptors including the Peregrine Falcon.
A couple miles south of the Aquarium is my favorite birding spot in this area. Just past the Southport Ferry landing is the tip of the island with a “spit" of land that extends into the river and sound. there is a walkable path around the edge of this, including a portion which is an old (1800s) rock and concrete jetty. Along this trail, you can see many species of shorebirds including rails, oystercatchers, Ibis, Herons, Gulls, Sandpipers, Sanderlings, Plovers, terns, etc. This is a “must do” site--don’t miss it! To see full descriptions of all the sites mentioned, check out the following links--1.Fort Fisher. 2. Fort Fisher Aquarium. To see photos taken in this area go my Journal Page for March 26, 2016.
