BALD HEAD ISLAND, N.C.

Bald Head Island lies offshore on the east side of the Cape Fear River in the Southeast corner of NC in Brunswick County. It is bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean. The island has a history spanning early American Indian use through Spanish exploration, the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, and has provided lighthouses for ship navigation since the 1700s. In recent years it has evolved into an exclusive resort and vacationing complex, with beautiful private homes, while maintaining its natural and easygoing atmosphere . The only way to reach the island is by ferry from Southport, and once there, one finds the only means of transportation is by electric golf cart along the quaint, narrow roads. It is truly a beautiful and tranquil place. The island is 3 miles long and about one mile wide. There are 14 miles of beach, 10,000 acres of marsh, and 180 acres of maritime forest. In the 2010 census there were 150 permanent residents. For a complete history of the island, please click on this link.

Bald Head offers vacation rentals ranging from rooms to condos to beautiful private beach homes and the maritime forest. There is a full market and several restaurants. the Bald Head Island Club offers a full 18 hole golf course, tennis, swimming, and croquet. The Sands Club offers tennis, swimming, and beach access.
Birding on the island is excellent. The diverse habitat of shoreline, marsh, freshwater lagoons, and saltwater marsh supports a large variety of species, including shorebirds, gulls and terns, egrets and herons, as well as many migrant warblers and the beautiful painting bunting, who nests here annually. For a complete description of hotspots and a list of all species to be found, please see this link. For a few pictures from the island see the gallery below.
