ARARAT RIVER GREENWAY, MT. AIRY, NC
This beautiful Trail is located along the Ararat River within the town limits of Mt. Airy, NC. It is a 2.2 mile(to be expand to 4.4 miles in July, 2016.) hike on hard surface over moderately hilly terrain. The habitat is mostly old hardwood forest with a few brushy fields along the way. For expanded information about this site, including birds you will likely see, please go to this link. The Ararat River is a fast running mountain trout stream that is open to Delayed Harvest trout fishing at special times in the fall. The trail is absolutely gorgeous with very large old hardwood trees lining the fast flowing stream. Expect to see a good variety of wildflowers in season. My visits here have provided excellent birding and you can see many warbler species in fall migration. For pictures I have taken here, please go to the Journal entry of July 9, 2016.
Of course Mt Airy(or Mayberry) is the birthplace of Andy Griffith and the home of the TV series which reminded us of simpler times. Mt. Airy provides many reminders of Andy and his cast of characters. Visit the Old Jail, Wally’s Service Station, Andy’s Office and the Justice of the Peace. Take a ride in Barney’s Squad car and visit Andy’s home and other sites. For great shopping visit the old downtown area. For full information about the area, check out this link. My 2 favorite restaurants here are 13 Bones and The Thai Cafe.
This location is a great place for a family vacation as well as the River trail. You will enjoy it! For pictures taken here go to this Journal entry.
